About Mayok Media

Hi, I’m Mayok—professionally known as Dr. Mary Mba, and affectionately called “Mama Mary” – a researcher, writer, teacher, academic leader, mother, community nurturer, and joyful troublemaker in the world of stories and ideas.

I created Mayok Media as a sanctuary for deep reflection, sharp analysis, and soft landings. Here, I explore the intersections of identity, politics, culture, spirituality, storytelling, motherhood, poetry, and the everyday beauty of life.

This space is a tapestry woven from:
– Critical commentary on society, education, and justice
– Creative writing—poetry, essays, personal narratives, and political reflections
– Film, horror, and cultural analysis from an African, feminist, immigrant, and diasporic lens
– Gardening, mindfulness, and ancestral wisdom
– Family-centered storytelling around motherhood, African cuisine, and intergenerational love
– Podcasts and conversations that hold space for complexity, laughter, and truth

Rooted in African, Francophone, and diasporic traditions, I bring to this work a lifetime of learning across languages, disciplines, and cultures. My scholarship lives alongside my spirituality. My leadership is informed by motherhood, migration, meditation, and memory.

I’ve taught and mentored across classrooms, communities, and continents—always returning to one core truth: storytelling is power.

Whether I’m unpacking a horror film, teaching a leadership workshop, braiding my daughter’s hair, or harvesting scent leaf from my garden, my work remains the same: to resist erasure, to celebrate life, and to write toward freedom.
